I think about coming back to my blog often, but since I'm not a good writer, it's a lot of mental gymnastics trying to find the right words to articulate what a song sounds like, but at this point, who really cares?
Music is weird.
I suppose if I had to start somewhere, it should be this breakout song from Olivia Rodrigo. I never seen high school musical: the musical: the series, and I definitely don't know how complex her relationship history is. But her story isn't important, the song's story is. How, and why did this song became such a huge, viral hit. Yes, she's another actress turned singer, and I don't think the song is very original, but as a person whose personal taste has become more pop since I last blogged regularly, this song feels like a graduation of all the major pop girls like Lorde, Billie Eilish, and Taylor Swift.
We heard songs that build up before and we heard songs with this type of bridge, and when she says she "never felt this way for no one," yeah, it resonates. Her lyrics are really desvasating. We were all 17 once. We all know that feeling of being wrong about the first person we liked. And so, ultimately, it's a fine song by itself, but I also feel that it's not original enough without that viral buzz. Who knows, if she releases an album, that could change, but on its own, it's 2021's first important song so it always has a spot on top.
