The Beths - Expert in a Dying Field

Release Date: September 16th, 2022

I discovered them back in 2018 and continued to like them for their follow up in 2020. I think people like their debut better, but both are so similar to me that neither of them really sound like an evolution. I can't really choose. I like certain songs from their debut, and I like certain songs from their sophomore album. The lesser songs are just songs i can chill to.

Review: This album is no different. Of the 12 songs, some stand out, some feel like autopilot, but in the end, i dig it. It doesn't feel challenging so this album basically went in one ear and out the other. I would say the first two songs open the album with your typical The Beths sound, then "Silence is Golden" tries it hardest to be heavy. "Your Side" was my first favorite on first listen. I always like the catchy songs that don't appear to be flashy. its very mellow.

"I want to listen" feels very chirpy. I really like "head in the clouds." it's on the heavier side, but I though it was fun and lean more pop-punk. it has a good crunch. "Best Left" reminded me of that one The Who song with that noise. The instruments of "what you know you know" sounds like an 90s alt-rock song so i thought that was cool. The last song feels more experimental with that outro.

SummaryAll in all, this is The Beths, I like them, the lead singer hooked me. But put all of their songs on shuffle and I probably couldn't tell you which album they belonged it.

Key Tracks: Knees Deep, Your Side, Head in the Clouds, What You Know You Know
Rating: 8/10
