Phoenix - Alpha Zulu

Release DateNovember 4th, 2022

Why did I stop listening to this band?  Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix was believed to be a modern classic, but in hindsight, it was carried by two great songs. I don't remember Bankrupt! much, but nothing on it could top "Lisztomania" or "1901," so I didn't even bother to listen to Ti Amo.

ReviewFor a band that's been around for two decades, I'm surprised that this is only their 7th album. The opening track sounded very mid 2000s to me, like the opening notes could be something The Knife would use. I think it's quirky and since it's the first track, I'm open to anything. The 2nd song has that guy from Vampire Weekend and it also sounds like a late 2000s song. I don't think it belongs on a best-of list, but it's groovy and I though both parties made the song a feel good anthem.  "The Only One" is suffice. Then "After Midnight" is really good. Maybe a bit too similar to their past, but it's nice to turn your brain off.

"Winter Solstice" is a slow burner and I like whatever synth percussion they are using during the chorus. Both "Season 2" and "Artefact" have nice melodies. It's kind of corny hearing them say "what's new in season two" or "i'm looking for an artifact." But the songs are so inoffensive that i don't mind it.

"All Eyes On Me" has a darker vibe, kind of like a villain theme and it's a nice change of pace for the album. "My Elixir" is the band's version of a ballad. it's cute. And finally, "Identical" closes the album and I thought it was really good, a steady beat and good progression. apparently it was released in 2020, but interesting lowkey closer.

SummaryJust like with their 2009 album, this album is carried by a few good tracks. And the rest just made me go, "I guess this is good since it doesn't annoy me."
