Young Mountain was nearly perfect for me. It was basically the side of Explosion in the Sky that I loved, but it maintained for the entire album. However, on their first full length album, nothing happened.
Review: Sure, "Threads" is actually good, but what else is there? I don't understand their need to have more ambient tracks that don't help the songs near it. What is the point to "Villa Del Refugio." It's not so bad on its own, but it doesn't add much to the album other than pretending to be deep and meaningful. 7 minutes of it just really kills the listener. Same can be said about "They Move On Tracks Of Never-Ending Light." It lasts too long and doesn't tie together the other tracks.
Which brings me to "The Mighty Rio Grande" that last for 11 minutes repeating the same notes over and over. It's actually a nice accomplishment being able to do that for so long, but it just feels lacking those monster movements found on "Young Mountain."
The rest of the tracks feel very standard. "Young Mountain" was able to make me feel inside and out. This album is just another instrumental album.
Summary: Lacking.
Key Tracks: A Three-Legged Workhorse, Threads
Rating: 6/10
