When I took a break from listening to music in the mid 2010s, I would still check music sites and I would lump Alex G with the mac demarco's and kurt vile's of the world. I don't know, Alex G just sounded like a boring ass name.
Review: So from the opening track, "After All" I thought this would be special. I thought it was Sufjan Stevens like with the banjo. The piano is good, and I'm not sure if this is a guest vocalist or Alex G's pitched his voice, but it sounded holy, like it was sung for church. With "Runner" I got a big smile on my face because it reminded me so much of alternative rock in the 2000's. I can hear a bit of Elliot Smith, and a bit of Rivers Cuomo too. It's such a basic 4/4 time signature, but I really liked it.
on "Mission," I got a big Rocky Votolato vibe. I like the part where he distance himself from the mic and then the background vocalist takes center stage. On "S.D.O.S." it's mostly instrumental, but there are some demonic vocals and towards the end, I guess the opposite of demonic vocals, they sound childlike from a computer. I really like the mood here. "No Bitterness" tricked me into thinking it would be your standard lo-fi singer songwriter song, but it has some good drums and some interesting background vocals, then it has a dance breakdown which I thought was funny, so I'll roll with it. "Ain't it Easy" is kind of hazy, There's this part where he whispers "ain't it easy ain't it easy" and i don't like it.
"Cross the Sea" didn't sound good to me either, but what the heck was "Blessing"? because I thought Youtube music messed up and picked the wrong song. But nope. I want to say it's terrible, but I'm also laughing my ass off because why would he do this? I like the melody of "Early Morning Waiting," it's so 90's alternative rock. "Immunity" wants to be a portal song with its computer vocals.
"Headroom Piano" is an alternative song with muffled lines. It's interesting. "Miracles" seems to be a standard folk song. kind of dry imo. "Forgive" is the closer, but I wish it were more powerful.
Summary:I don't know if I'll get around to visiting his back catalog, but this album really changed my perception of him. He's definitely more diverse and experimental than I had anticipated.
