Avalon Emerson - & the Charm

Release DateApril 28th, 2023

When I saw the name and album cover, I thought this was for a movie soundtrack.

ReviewAnd I'd like to imagine it is for a coming-of-age movie. the music is very light and fluffy. The singing isn't that good, but since I like female vocals of any kind, I find her to be calming and soothing. There isn't much range, but whatever. A quick google search tells me that she is mostly known as a DJ, so this debut album is interesting under that light. My big negative is that when there isn't much singing, those parts can feel boring.

SummaryIt sounds great if you imagine it's from a coming-of-age movie.

Armand Hammer — We Buy Diabetic Test Strips

Release DateSeptember 29th, 2023

ReviewBilly Woods is one half of Armand Hammer, along with Elucid. Compared to Maps, this album sounds like it goes harder, which to me, made things more interesting. Still, I didn't feel a sense of boredom when the album was playing, and I played it 3 times so far. However, it's not something I wanted to listen to again.

Summary:   Enjoyed this album slightly more than Maps, but it's still not something I want to revisit.

Asake - Work of Art

Release DateJune 16th, 2023

ReviewI don't have a frame of reference for this type of music, for all I know, this could be some basic afrobeats stuff, but I really enjoyed it on first listen. Granted, I didn't look up the lyrics, but it feels spiritual and supportive. like let the heavens rain on me, that's how it feels. He does mumble a lot, don't know if that's intentional or that's just how he sings. but the music is just great.

Summaryall the songs hover between 2:30-3:00 so it goes by quick. The quality is consistent, but when he goes sentimental, it's hard to not feel something in return. it's only 36 minutes so unlike a lot of american rap albums, it doesn't wear you down.

sadness, abriction - sadness // abriction

Release DateMarch 27th, 2023

Review: Found this on rateyourmusic's top 2023 charts where it was at 40. There are elements of this album that I like, as well as elements where I wish it was condensed. I think the ambient parts are pretty, but it's also asking for a lot of my attention because these songs don't need to be 15 or 20 minutes. I understand this is a split album, but both of them sound similar enough that it feels like a continuous album. It's not a competition, but if I had to say, I like sadness just a bit better.

SummaryI like it, but it's recorded in a way that it sounds like your older brother is listening to music in his room and has no idea the whole house can hear it too. It's hard to say if it's good or not because it does hit those familiar emo beats. I like it, but I don't know if I'll return. but I have my eyes on them.

Alex G - God Save The Animals

Release DateSeptember 23rd, 2022

When I took a break from listening to music in the mid 2010s, I would still check music sites and I would lump Alex G with the mac demarco's and kurt vile's of the world. I don't know, Alex G just sounded like a boring ass name.

ReviewSo from the opening track, "After All" I thought this would be special. I thought it was Sufjan Stevens like with the banjo. The piano is good, and I'm not sure if this is a guest vocalist or Alex G's pitched his voice, but it sounded holy, like it was sung for church. With "Runner" I got a big smile on my face because it reminded me so much of alternative rock in the 2000's. I can hear a bit of Elliot Smith, and a bit of Rivers Cuomo too. It's such a basic 4/4 time signature, but I really liked it.

on "Mission," I got a big Rocky Votolato vibe. I like the part where he distance himself from the mic and then the background vocalist takes center stage. On "S.D.O.S." it's mostly instrumental, but there are some demonic vocals and towards the end, I guess the opposite of demonic vocals, they sound childlike from a computer. I really like the mood here. "No Bitterness" tricked me into thinking it would be your standard lo-fi singer songwriter song, but it has some good drums and some interesting background vocals, then it has a dance breakdown which I thought was funny, so I'll roll with it. "Ain't it Easy" is kind of hazy, There's this part where he whispers "ain't it easy ain't it easy" and i don't like it.

"Cross the Sea" didn't sound good to me either, but what the heck was "Blessing"?  because I thought Youtube music messed up and picked the wrong song. But nope. I want to say it's terrible, but I'm also laughing my ass off because why would he do this?  I like the melody of "Early Morning Waiting," it's so 90's alternative rock. "Immunity" wants to be a portal song with its computer vocals.

"Headroom Piano" is an alternative song with muffled lines. It's interesting. "Miracles" seems to be a standard folk song. kind of dry imo. "Forgive" is the closer, but I wish it were more powerful.

Summary:I don't know if I'll get around to visiting his back catalog, but this album really changed my perception of him. He's definitely more diverse and experimental than I had anticipated.

Alvvays - Blue Rev

Release Date: October 7th, 2022

I saw them open for The National, and i really really wanted to like this.

Review: but i don't find their music to be very catchy. When "Pharmacist" came out, i thought it was a nothing track, and now given the context of the album, it's still a nothing track. Maybe I expected it to be fun and singalong material, but overall, its just an hazy, shoegazey, noisy album. I'm not saying it's bad, but I just don't get why this album is getting so much praised. "Many Mirrors" is my favorite song .

SummaryWith all the praised, i went in thinking this would be bop after bop, but it's not. It's just a hazy, shoegazey mess, if you're into that sort of thing.

Favorite Songs: Many Mirrors, Belinda Says

Animal Collective - Time Skiffs

Release Date: February 4th, 2022

I was shocked when pitchfork gave this best new music because after MPP, everything they released since didn't feel as fresh or original anymore. They still sounded like Animal Collective, but either the music landscaped has changed, or my listening habits changed, or simply, the band had run its course.

Review: so there's only 9 tracks here, the first two sounded like AnCo of the 2010s, but "Prester John" and "Strung with Everything" really bought back that hypnotic trance I used to get from them where they repeat something over and over and the music starts to multiply on you til the bass section really echoes in your bones.  I also really like Cherokee. Don't have much to say about the rest because they really do sound like AnCo of the 2010s which is very middle of the road. Although, I kinda want to note that "We Go Back" sounds like an attempt to make a stand alone single and i just think it sucks.

Summary: some good stuff on here, the rest sounds like the AnCo of the 2010s.

Favorite Songs: Prester John, Strung with Everything, Cherokee

Avril Lavigne - Love Sux

 Release Date: February 25th, 2022

Of course, everybody knew who Avril was in the early aughts, then she disappeared. I remember hearing that she was bedridden due to lyme disease and she was getting fan support just to overcome the disease. Then her 6th album came out and it was panned so I never bothered to give it a listen. But when Love Sux dropped this past February, I only heard positive things about it.

Review: and yeah, it's a tight 33 minutes. A lot of the lyrics are not something I would ever quote. you know, "stupid" with "cupid." Her rhymes feel like they were written for 7th graders. But the album benefit so much for the short length and kept each song at under 3 minutes. I wasn't the biggest fan of Avril or the pop punk scene in the early 00s, still, nostalgia plays a huge part when you don't hear a particular sound for a while. When Machine Gun Kelly tried to do this, there was a barrier of him being too much like Blink-182.

And so with Avril, this entire album is a slice of early 00s if done today, and it just feels right. very predicable. very surface level. and like i said about the length, the album just cruises by, that i don't feel exhausted.  I don't think there's a radio hit here that can enter the zeitgeist. There are collabs with MGK, blackbear, and Mark Hoppus and i can hear the newer style of pop punk bleeding thought with some of the songs. it's loud and catchy and fun.

Summary: Hey, it's 33 minutes Avril not giving a fuck, like the pop punk princess she is. I don't know how it compares to hear 3rd to 6th albums, but as someone who was a fan of her 1st album, this was a fun album to get lost in.

Adele - Easy On Me

Release Date: October 15th, 2021

I don't have much to say, it's Adele. She has a distinct voice and it's nice to hear her again. The piano is nice. The mood is kinda sad, kinda reflective. I do wish she would come out with a banger like "Rolling in the deep," but iono, I'm glad that there isn't any pressure of her to change her sound to be more current.

aespa - Savage

Release Date: October 5th, 2021
Genre: kpop, hiphop

This group is wild. I wasn't sure about their first single, but their 2nd single grow on me and I was impressed how they took a fast and furious song nobody heard of and made it awesome.

Review
: So the first track "aenergy" feels like a setup track because it's easy to get into and there's that feeling of a build up. Then with the title track, "Savage," on first listen, it was a big "what the fuck is this?" but the "gimme gimme now" became endearing and the song just makes me laugh at how many genres it can combine. It definitely left a mark. The next song sounds a bit weird to me, but because it's still weird, I like how messy it sounds.

I think with "YEPPI YEPPI" they went full pop here and I should like it, but it reminds me of Itzy and I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. The chorus feels tired to me when it's clearly suppose to be upbeat and cheery. "ICONIC" sounds okay. And the last song, "Lucid Dream," I like how smooth it goes. It seems like I'm always a sucker for kpop songs that are dreamlike.

Tracklist/Scorecard
:
1. aenergy 8/10
2. Savage 9/10
3. I'll Make You Cry 8/10
4. YEPPI YEPPI 7/10
5. ICONIC 6/10
6. Lucid Dream 8/10

Summary
: Will this grow on me?  I don't know. "Next Level" and "Savage" have this ridiculousness that confuses me, but I also find engaging and entertaining. Occasionally, I hear some impressive vocals from some of the girls. I think I like their raps more than their singing. They are a group that I'll keep watch for.

Alien Boy - Don't Know What I Am

Release Date: August 20th, 2021
Genre: Alternative, emo, shoegaze

Been listening to the first 4 tracks for a while, and when it comes to anything with a hint of emo, I really don't know why certain bands click while the more popular choices do not. The vocals here sounds deflated and I love it

Review
: I'll group the first 4 songs and say they remind me of The Wrens, and Nirvana, and My Bloody Valentine.  Since I had them on repeat, I doubt any of the other tracks will replace it, I just found those four tracks back to back to back to be really nostalgic. On "Dear Nora," I like how clash of sounds it feels and the lyrics basically repeat. I think "Heartburn" is a better example of them being shoegaze because it creates this brain-fog of noise.

"Something Better" has a long intro and I get late 90s alt rock vibes from it. Track 8 is probably the fastest or hardest track here, but it's just noisy to me. Nothing wrong with it. Anyways, I know i'm bad at adjectives so I'll just say this, the band has gained my trust and the last 3 songs, I'm not looking for reasons to like it, I feel like I get it.

Tracklist/Scorecard
:
1. The Way I Feel 9/10
2. Nothing's Enough 9/10
3. Dear Nora 9/10
4. Heartburn 9/10
5. Ache #2 8/10
6. Something Better 8/10
7. Seventeen 8/10
8. How Do I Think When Yr Asleep? 7/10
9. Memory's Vault 7/10
10. TV Will Always Make Me Cry 7/10
11. The Way I Disappoint You 8/10

Summary
: This band doesn't have a wikipedia page yet, so I hope they don't read this. I found them because of Pitchfork and their album cover looked interesting, and I tend to stay away from alternative music, but Alien Boy is one of those bands that sound like other alternative bands, but since I'm not too deep there, they just click for me.

Arm's Length - Everything Nice EP

Release Date: February 25, 2021
Genre: emo

I have a specific type of emo, and these boys hit that itch for me.

Review
: Found these boys thanks to a review on pitchfork and because I remember Moving Mountains had a song called Arm's Length, so it piqued my curiosity. Needless to say, I really love the vibe on "No Sleep." It's very reminiscence of other emo bands. Then when it ended with "Garamond," I really enjoyed how grand it sounded and the vocals that sound like they are too far away from the mic.  Since it's only 17 minutes long, all the songs in-between just flew by for me and I knew I enjoyed all of it.

Tracklist/Scorecard
:
1. Theme Song 8/10
2. No Sleep 9/10
3. Gallows Humour 8/10
4. Safer Skin 8/10
5. Eve (Household Name) 8/10
6. Garamond 9/10

ABBA Gold: Greatest Hits

Release Date: 09/21/92
Genre: Pop/Disco

My Story: Do people realize how ridiculous this album is?  I heard "Dancing Queen," but nothing else.  I was unaware that the Broadway show, Mamma Mia! was based on the music of ABBA and I even saw their name on the list of best selling recording artist of all times.  But I never tried them until i was in a live chat with 4400 star, Jacqueline McKenzie who sang a bit of "Take a Chance on Me."  So I downloaded their greatest hits album as a quick start to their music, but the crazy part is that once i got through each song, it blew my mind that every song has a hook.  I guess that should be expected since this was their greatest hits.  but I'm a newbie to their music so it was just ridiculous how memorable and perfect the pop melodies were.  Also, the track list is perfect.  It even feels like the songs were made to support each other.

Review: Wow.  I have no interest in seeing the movie this soundtrack was made for and i was never a big Arctic Monkeys fan, but i gave this a chance because i liked the album cover and I'm disappointed that this is only 6 songs long, but maybe that's the perfect length.  Yeah, this is nothing ground breaking, but his voice and instrumentation is gorgeous.

Adele - 21

Release Date: 2/22/11
Genre: Singer-songwriter, Neo Soul

Review: I'm tempted to just write "holy shit" for being so surprised in how impressed I am, i mean, sure it's not groundbreaking music and compared to the only other song i heard from her, "Chasing Pavements," I feel that she really came onto her own now.  Before, i thought she was one of those UK girls riding on Amy Winehouse's coattail, but on 21, Basically every song is crazy good.  I always treasure artist that are real and Adele makes me feel that every word she burps out is true.  Who ever broke her heart deserves props.

Avril Lavigne - What The Hell

From Album: Goodbye Lullaby

It's pop.  It's Avril.  It's crazy. Hopefully this song encourages girls to mess around, but she said this is the only upbeat song and the rest of the album will more grown up and mellow.  So we'll see.

Antony and the Johnsons - The Crying Light

Release Date: 01/19/09
Genre: Baroque pop

So here's an album everyone has heard by now. I wasn't too keen to their album or EP, but this album made me rethink that.

Review: I remember just letting this one play out for me and like a knife, there was a moment where I just felt this album click for me. Maybe I'm cheating because I heard "Another World" on that short EP last year. But in the middle of it, I just felt like I got it. Then when I replayed it after I got a sense, the whole thing just fell in place.

I suppose the best way to describe it would be a grown man crying, not to be confused with 00's pop punk. His voice always seems to be on the edge of cracking. Plus, the music is very elegant. Good piano work, nice string section. Very new territory for me. For the most part, it's a smooth ride. The contrast of the vocal/music is something unique for the band. Very interesting. Catchy chorus aren't on this album. I always found it easier to use new music as background music as I do other things and when the songs starts to unravel, those moments really shine.

The only downside that I picked up, the vocals are so distinct that it overshadows everything the instruments do so in the long run, it gets harder to pick up on the music, or maybe the music just gets boring in the second half. The last 3 songs are pretty decent, but as a chunk, I find it hard to be excited on the same level as the first 3 or 4 tracks. So the ending to the album is kind of dry for me and I didn't feel like the band was trying anymore.

Summary: Vocals are so frail if you're into that stuff.

Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion

Release Date: 01/20/09
Genre: Psychedelic, Electronic, Dream pop

After discovering Strawberry Jam, I downloaded a podcast from NPR where AC played a full concerts and it's from Bob Bolin that I paraphrased the line, "This band is like ecstasy for listeners," but I was disappointed when I couldn't find a studio recording of Dreamer (now know as In The Flowers) and Bearhug (now known as Summertime Clothes). So yeah, I was aware of the hype in the blogosphere, but I just wanted to hear a few songs.

Review: So the word 'accessible' is gonna be thrown a lot. It doesn't feel like 54 minutes have pass once the last song finishes and their freak-folkish nature is almost nonexistent so those wild and chaotic moments won't detour people that can't stand the explosives noises. MPP sounds like a safe album on paper, but they aren't trying to be mainstream. They are 3 childhood friends (Deakin is on hiatus) who enjoy making music for themselves. Likewise, they are one of a few bands that I can say to have an unique sound, although they keep evolving.

The beginning of "In The Flowers" reminded me of Panda Bear's solo stuff and I almost expected to hear, " try...." but a robotic "I'm a dancer" echos with some squishy stomp. The music seems to be spinning in circle just waiting for something. The best part has to be, "If I could just leave my body for a night," and then the song just let's go of everything as a ray of magic lights blasts down. Lots of irregular sounds, lots of bass. That feeling the first time is jaw dropping. Then it calms down.

"My Girls" follows with a tingly sensation that stays the entire song and the two vocalist duke it out, but they never cross paths. It's really cool how they harmonies without sounding alike. The lyrics here are pretty repetitive, which is their style, but the progression the song takes almost turns it into an instrumental song. I get the point that it's about fatherhood, but I also want "four walls and an adobe stabs." What does that even mean? Their lyrics mean something, but the music seems to immerse the listener, the lyrics feel like a rhythm. I love the layering and the extra handclap replacing that missing bass beat.

"Also Frightened" took some time for me because the sound is a messy collage, but towards the middle, it's easier to hear the patterns and that whole "Are you also frightened?" repeating as the vocals get more and more intense. Feels good man. The bass here is strong again, but as you get into other parts of the album, the songs tend to feel like they drift forever into space, this one to me feels more in that traditional AC campfire sound, until the 'frightened' part, then the sound almost gets layered under some bubbles.

The fourth song, "Summertime Clothes" was my most anticipated track. The only thing I miss from the live version is that scream after the line, "Don't cool of, I like your warmth." But whatever, the studio version is highly addictive and it's very playful and it's hard to not get caught up with the chorus, "I want to walk around with you!" This is their most folkish song, but with careful ears, there's so many sounds they have that just swirl that only headphones could pick up. So as a music junkie, finding those new things with each listen is an experience. "when the sun goes down we'll go out again (x16)."

"Daily Routine" starts with a synth that finds itself burping and when the vocals come, it seems to be following the voices. For the first half, it's like a new wave song with the pounding industrial beat. The second half almost stops as if they ran out of music, so the vocals have to make with what's left on the table. It's the only time on the album where the music gets drawn out, but again, they never feel like a bore. More spooky in a goodbye way.

"Bluish" is probably the prettiest song AC has ever done. The landscape sounds very much like their latest EP, lush-ish and under-watery. I love that keyboard intro. There's this gentle back and forth motion in the sound and Avey's voice sound the softest I can ever remember. Lots of textures happening and the melodies are very welcomed. No one really gets sad from an AC song, but after everything they've done in making me smile, "Bluish" is a ballad that sorta touched my heart. The extra samples they use made the song have this boiling butterfly in your tummy feeling.

"Guys Eyes" didn't click for me at first, but it soon became one of my favorites. Again, this is another song that uses very little lyrics, but the layering of each phases pile on top of each other til it leaks out and buzz. Panda's a pretty boy and Avey's less audible and I'm sure you're sick of me saying it, but the harmonies of the two are so perfect and when they finally come together to sing the same lines, it hits home.

"Taste" reduces itself back to a more grounded song. It doesn't have that underwater feel, but the song is fluid in how it it doesn't have a strong foundation. In the background, there's a nintendo-ish fairy sound that seems to circle the song.

The jungle sounding "Lion in a Coma" uses a didgeridoo to make things interesting and it's the second most upbeat track. The vocals are faster and the words seem to blur or blend into one another, on purposes of course. The beats are all over the place. It gets ridiculous towards the end as if he were out of control, then he finishes with the line, "Lion in a coma, Lion in a coma/don't keep lying in a coma.." Cheap wordplay, but it fits.

On its own, "No More Runnin'" is a bit dreamy so it's hard to get caught in, but the album sorta trains the mind to get into a trance so this song is a nice change of pace. Feels like the samples use are nighttime sounds with waves of batman's cave, so the tempo is down and the mood is chilly, haunting. A page from the Water Curses EP.

The closer, "Brothersport" is one giant rave song. Almost broken into three parts, each catchy as it moves on. The first with Panda singing a burst of 3-4 syllables, "open up your/let that 'oh'" with variations down the way. Once this tropical roots intro builds, the two vocalist harmonies like they knew this was their final game. The second part is around 1:30, once the vocals fade, all you hear is a siren 'woot' sound that turns the track into a night club. "MATT." and it becomes less complex only for it to speed into that final leg of the song. Yes the lyrics repeat a lot, but so do many pop bands who repeat the same chords. The vocals are another means of creating a rhythm.

So for all the hype and praised, this is well deserved and whoever is reading this, I'm sure I'm over hyping it for you. Whatever idea you have of Animal Collective, get rid of it and just immerse yourself into the journey. The album cover is pretty accurate. It's trippy, but who cares. Music doesn't always have to pierce your armor. You won't see a basic formula or catchy chorus, but this is music at it's highly form of art.

Summary: This is their most consistent and accessible album to date. Liza called me a hypocrite for already declaring this as my AotY, but surely, if 2009 has 2 or 3 albums that can top this, it's gonna be a good year for music. Everyone in the internet world is comparing it to Pet Sounds, but this is an album only AC could have made and I can't see it being release other than 2009. There are too many great songs here that manage to stay different, but makes sense within the universe AC have created. If you don't trust my taste in music, whatever, but this is the stuff your kids will be asking you about.

Alli Rogers - You and the Evening Sky

Release Date: 04/15/08
Genre: Singer-Songwriter, Country Folk

Inner Ear Media really loves this girl. And I had leftover downloads on eMusic so I though I would finally give her a listen. Also, her webpage's Header reads "Untitled Document."

Review: So her voice is nice, but sounds more suited for background vocals. On her own, she has this safe and pure quality to her and part of me feels like she is holding back. Maybe she doesn't have range, but whatever. I didn't feel that the music was interesting either so when you add both of those together, it's a pretty tame album. If she was aiming for that "traditional" sense, then good job.

I didn't mind "Carry a Light" as it's the opener and she shifts from delicate to youthful in the verse to a more bubbly chorus. It's almost corny to how bubbly it is. "Don't Wash Your Hands of Me" borrows more pop elements with a "la la la la la la la la la la" chorus. It comes out alright, but distracts from the rest of the song.

I really enjoyed "Closer to the Moon" and "At Sea" as both of their choruses don't feel out of place. Although the former is mainly a "oh oh oh," it's one of the album's strongest songs as I actually believed her feelings and she doesn't need a obvious hook to draw me in. "At Sea" is the same reasoning, the relationship of the verse-chorus are really close that it flows really smoothly.

"The Things We Can And Cannot Keep" has such a good spark in her verses, but the chorus has a rocky start. Still, I like how she sings "there are things we can..." and the bridge finally has some fire.

Tracks 6-8 fall under the okay category. "I Caught Sight" really reminded me of Canadian indie pop and her voice become breathy during the chorus. "Baby I Believe In You" sounds a bit of chamber pop. "How Long Until We Get There" has a groovy Spanish flavor and I like the chorus.

"New Today" is cool. I like it. "Come Now My Love" is a little weak.

Summary: O dear, I wish I had a solid rating system. As a whole, it's an album that doesn't push the genre and it's not a must-have album unless you're a deeply-root fan of female singers-songwriters. For now, I have her album in my good pile, but my sub-conscious won't allow me to give this a 6, so here you go Alli. a 7.
