Release Date: February 25th, 2022
Of course, everybody knew who Avril was in the early aughts, then she disappeared. I remember hearing that she was bedridden due to lyme disease and she was getting fan support just to overcome the disease. Then her 6th album came out and it was panned so I never bothered to give it a listen. But when Love Sux dropped this past February, I only heard positive things about it.
Review: and yeah, it's a tight 33 minutes. A lot of the lyrics are not something I would ever quote. you know, "stupid" with "cupid." Her rhymes feel like they were written for 7th graders. But the album benefit so much for the short length and kept each song at under 3 minutes. I wasn't the biggest fan of Avril or the pop punk scene in the early 00s, still, nostalgia plays a huge part when you don't hear a particular sound for a while. When Machine Gun Kelly tried to do this, there was a barrier of him being too much like Blink-182.
And so with Avril, this entire album is a slice of early 00s if done today, and it just feels right. very predicable. very surface level. and like i said about the length, the album just cruises by, that i don't feel exhausted. I don't think there's a radio hit here that can enter the zeitgeist. There are collabs with MGK, blackbear, and Mark Hoppus and i can hear the newer style of pop punk bleeding thought with some of the songs. it's loud and catchy and fun.
Summary: Hey, it's 33 minutes Avril not giving a fuck, like the pop punk princess she is. I don't know how it compares to hear 3rd to 6th albums, but as someone who was a fan of her 1st album, this was a fun album to get lost in.
